Less congested roads through mobile phone transport management

It is the last day of the Mobile active 08 conference today October 15 and this morning, Pieter Henning, for the KwaZulu Natal Department of Transport (KZN DoT), presented an interesting possibility of using mobile phones to form lift clubs that will provide transport opportunities for those commuters who do not have cars.

The Collecting and Exchange of Local Agricultural Content (CELAC www.celac.or.ug), is the agricultural wing of the Ugandan NGO, BROSDI (Busoga Rural Open Source & Development Initiative). It aims to improve the livelihoods and food security of rural farmers through engaging the government, private sector and civil society in knowledge sharing and information management using ICTs.

Mobile phone increases access to quality education: the case of BridgeIt

The use of mobile phones in the Philippines and Tanzania has increased access to quality education among grade five and six students, according to Allan Williams, Vice President at the International Youth Foundation. He was speaking during the workshop called “Bringing Mobile solutions to scale: issues and models,” at the MobileActive08 conference currently underway in Johannesburg.

Mobile phone technology for non-formal distance education

The Molave Foundation is involved in a project using SMS for long-distance education. All that a student needs to do is to text a request and then a code is given enabling him or her to enter the system. At present two major subjects are covered: Maths and English.

Use of Mobile Phones for Organic Coffee Certification

Digital ICSCS is a small mobile application used to help coffee farmers in Oaxaca; Mexico achieve organic and fair trade certification. It has so far reached more than 1000 farmers and is estimated to reach even more.

Sociological realities taken into consideration in developing technology

Sociological realities have to be taken into consideration when developing technology. It is well and good to have technology that will solve humanitarian needs, but people who need help in identified areas might not be conversant with the technology.

As novas Tecnologias de Informaçao e Comunicaçao (TIC’s) devem promover a participaçao dos cidadaos nos processos de governaçao e desenvolvimento local. Esta foi a mensagem principal da reflexao apresentada pelo Prof. Jose Carlos Vaz, da Universidade de Sao Paulo do Brasil, na sua intervençao no Workshop sobre Mobileactive08 iniciado a 13 de Outubro, em Johannesburg.
