How Are You Going to Monitor Your Security Data in 2022?

By some estimates, there are more than 1 billion security cameras in operation today. (Within the next five years, experts predict that there will be tens of billions of security cameras; simply put, they are growing at an exponential rate.) According to IHS Markit Technology, China alone has 567 million surveillance cameras monitoring the activities of its citizens. It should come as no surprise then that China is home to nine out of ten of the most surveilled cities in the world

Typically, when the media reports on the large number of video surveillance cameras in use, their intention is to highlight privacy concerns. The “Big Brother is Watching You” meme looms large in the public imagination. However, the bigger question is: how is China, or any other country or enterprise, able to successfully make practical use of all the security footage they’re collecting?

Over the course of the last two decades, journalists across various outlets have reported, with some alarm, that humans lose the ability to concentrate on a single task after 8 seconds—if you were paying attention to the problems of human attention span circa 2017, you might have heard reference to a Microsoft study that unfavorably compared our attention spans to that of goldfish. Apparently, goldfish have us beat by one second when it comes to concentration.

The goldfish v. human attention span comparison is actually a story that gets picked up every decade or so when Americans are feeling especially anxious about what technology is doing to our brains. And while it’s largely nonsense—our devices and Netflix are not turning us into hyperactive fish—many peer-reviewed academic studies make clear that we as a species are not very good at concentrating on mundane tasks for sustained periods of time

Which brings us back to the question of what is being protected by our globe’s billions of cameras. If we’re relying on humans to monitor the activities of others, identify threats and security risks, it’s pretty clear that Big Brother is either going to fall asleep or be distracted by a cat video on their smartphone, completely missing the security threat that appears on their monitors in their third hour of surveillance.

The latest trend in security is AI-based analytics, which overcomes the problem of humans’ natural inattention by automating the identification of certain traits and behaviors, allowing your enterprise’s security personnel to perform the task that is uniquely suited to human intelligence: adjudicating and responding to incidents.

How Is AI Used in Security

Security in 2022 needs to be thought of as a holistic solution: the same biometric AI technology that powers today’s facial recognition cameras is also a critical component of modern access control systems. When we discuss the next generation of AI surveillance technologies below, it will become clear that in the very near future, the entire ecosystem of yesterday’s separate and disconnected security systems will be combined into a single device and platform.

The security solutions we provide our clients revolve around a simple yet critically-important premise: security needs to be proactive rather than reactive; responsive rather than forensic.

AI-powered security enables a proactive approach. Here is a short list of some of the solutions that MCA offers enterprises of all sizes as AI security for business solutions:

Appearance Search – Appearance search AI automatically sorts through selected cameras and durations of footage, locating specific persons, vehicles, or objects, according to the parameters that you input. For example, rather than combing through days of footage to locate a single vehicle, you can select the color and object type, input this into the appearance search software and let the AI provide results for users to engage.

Facial Recognition Cameras – In order to automate the process of locating persons of interest in a vast pool of video data, you need cameras that can support facial recognition technology. For instance, if you’re looking for a particular individual, you can upload a photo into one of our software systems to generate results.

Focus of Attention Interface – A focus of attention interface gives security personnel an easy-to-read topology of your entire camera system represented by color-coded nodes—in addition to AI-powered rules engines to identify activities that require human intervention—making it easy to immediately know what incident is occurring when and where.

Unusual Motion Detection – Unusual motion detection is a self-learning AI video technology that determines what the typical activity in any given environment looks like. Once your system learns what typical activity resembles, it can easily generate red flags when someone or something is out of sync. The system can then proactively notify users when unusual activity has been detected.

The important thing about any type of AI security technology is that it is able to pinpoint and focus the attention of your security personnel and operators on what might be of interest quickly and effectively. It is up to human intelligence to determine whether what your security technology identifies requires a response—in this way, artificial and human intelligence work together to achieve the goal of a more secure  and responsible environment for us all.

Security 4.0

Looking forward to the future of security, there are many exciting developments on the horizon. If we could come up with two words that capture the future of security they would be: automation and portability.

When our security systems—intrusion detection, access control systems, and video surveillance—remain separate, threats can slip through the proverbial cracks. One of the more fascinating developments in the field of AI security is Augmented Reality for Integrated Electronic Security—or ARIES. Utilizing the Microsoft HoloLens, the ARIES platform offers an ergonomic and untethered wearable head display that will bring video feeds, access control, intrusion detection, and alert information directly to the user.

For instance, think about your typical security guard or law enforcement officer. Today, they may be in radio communication with central command when they’re in the field; otherwise, they’re likely stuck at a desk monitoring video feeds or responding to alarms. With a mixed reality security platform such as ARIES, however, security personnel and law enforcement officers can interact with their environment while receiving video feeds, sending duress signals, and locking down doors or gates. When integrated with industry-leading access control and video management software, mixed reality security provides for a complete surveillance system that optimizes situational awareness.

Answering the question with which we began—how are you going to monitor your surveillance data in 2022?—now seems easy. Artificial intelligence will do the heavy lifting when it comes to sorting through the security data you collect, leaving humans to perform the role best suited for them: making the decision of how to respond to what their intelligent surveillance systems discover.

Last year, the Orangeburg County School District (OCSD) confronted the problem of securing consistent communication between its bus drivers and school administrators, safety officers, and parents.

OCSD is unique: the district covers over 76 miles from east to west, with 31 public elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, along with three career academies. Serving more than 13,000 students across rural areas of South Carolina made having a reliable in-vehicle communication system for their bus fleet a must.

After a bond referendum in 2020, which had the overwhelming support of voters in the county, Orangeburg administrators partnered with MCA to outfit their entire fleet of buses with mobile radios. Before this, bus drivers had been using their cell phones, depending on unpredictable signal coverage, to communicate with school administrators and safety officers.

Teaming up with MCA, OCSD decided to install Motorola’s MOTOTRBO XPR 5550e Digital Radios in all of their buses.

MOTOTRBO XPR 5550e Digital Radios offer a number of features that make them the preferred choice for school bus fleets across the country. With integrated Bluetooth 4.0 and Wifi, these radios allow bus drivers to communicate not only with school administrators and security personnel at the touch of a button, but also provide a direct line to law enforcement and first responders in the event of an emergency.

Buying radio systems from MCA enables schools, along with other public institutions and businesses, to join the TRBOMax™ network. TRBOMax™ is a completely secure trunked radio network solution that covers up to 95% of the Palmetto State. Each site within the system enables thousands of users to communicate across UHF radio frequencies.

TRBOMax™ is the only radio network system in South Carolina that connects directly to emergency services, enabling school personnel to convey critical information directly to first responders in the unfortunate event that they need to respond to the scene of an accident.

School administrators from the Orangeburg County School District demonstrated great foresight (and financial wisdom) in using some of the money raised by their bond issue to update the communications infrastructure of their bus fleet. While their largest improvement came in the installation of mobile radios on their buses, they also invested in base stations at a number of locations and two-way radios.

Taken altogether, OCSD’s investment in MOTOTRBO XPR 5550e mobile radios, base stations, and MOTOTRBO XPR 7550e two-way radios have given them a comprehensive and complete communications ecosystem, ensuring the safety of their students and instantaneously connecting them to public safety services.

Empowering their bus drivers, school safety personnel, and administrators, to respond to incidents from bullying to more serious problems as they arise has paid off when it comes to Orangeburg school district’s ability to safely shepherd students from home to school (and vice versa), as well as on field trips.

Given that TRBOMax™ provides comprehensive coverage from South Carolina’s Upstate region all the way down to Hilton Head, parents and school personnel can now rest assured that their children and students will never be out of contact.

Partnering with MCA, the OCSD invested in digital radios that offer the clearest signal and largest network currently on the market. As a result, today, the parents of those attending public school in Orangeburg County can be confident that their children will be safe wherever OCSD school buses may roam.

Their experienced team serves a broad variety of customers, ranging from education to healthcare to government and public safety. CooperCraft offers a full suite of products and professional services, from design and engineering through implementation and integration.

CooperCraft CEO Jerry Cooper said, “CooperCraft Communications is excited to be starting a new chapter in our company’s history by forming a new partnership with Mobile Communications America. Almost 20 years ago, I started CooperCraft with just 3 employees, and over the years have been approached by several companies interested in partnering with us. The Top 4 Challenges for the Construction Industry in 2021 and 2022

As the country emerges from the Covid-19 pandemic, industries across the board face new challenges. With the rise of the Covid Delta variant, a renewed uncertainty regarding if businesses and industries are going to be required to “shutdown” again revives our economic anxieties.

Many businesses have shown that their workers can simply work from home. For example, tech giants such as Google and Facebook have extended their work-from-home policies indefinitely in the face of materializing Covid variants. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey made news last year when he said that his employees could work at home “forever” if they wanted.

Unfortunately, for builders and contractors working from home is typically not an option—various building firms have looked into remote work in the pre-building stage—but construction is obviously an industry that requires workers to be in-person on the job site for the most part.

In this article, we will examine some of the challenges, as well as the solutions to these challenges, in the construction industry for this year and next.

  1. Construction Worker Labor Shortages

Even before the disruption to the construction industry in 2019-2020, labor shortages were already a problem for general contractors. At the heart of this labor shortage is the fact that millennials and Gen-Z sometimes dismiss construction work as a viable occupation.

As the former Fed Chairman Paul Volcker remarked to an older civil engineer when he learned that Yale University had given up their Civil Engineering program: “The trouble with the United States recently is we spent several decades not producing many civil engineers and producing a huge number of financial engineers. And the result is crappy bridges and a crappy financial system.”

The same could be said about the construction industry. Poor financial institutions, and poor buildings has been the net result of the American economy’s collective decision to move away from the disciplines and trades that once made us great.

While we need to add more money to nonresidential construction projects to make up for the Covid-19 labor loss, we also need to spend more time going forward convincing America’s young people that construction is, as we well know, a noble profession.

Construction is, in fact, the perfect job for those who want to earn a great living without spending tens of thousands of dollars on a college degree. Many young people are completely unaware that specializing in a construction field earns a higher net pay per hour than many jobs that require a college diploma.

The future skilled workers in construction are out there; the construction industry simply ways to recruit qualified candidates.

Mobile Communications America (MCA) believes, in turn, that embracing new technologies (see below) will not only reduce costs and save time in the construction, but also encourage the younger generation to want to learn skilled construction trades–carpentry, brick masonry, elevator installers, glaziers, etc.

A large part of MCA’s commitment to the construction industry is a commitment to its future.

  1. Rising Material Costs

Due to the recent reduction in production and increased housing demand, material costs in construction have risen at breakneck speed. Lumber and plywood prices have gone up 56% in the past year; copper and brass by more than 30%; steel by more than 10%; and precast concrete by more than 4%.

There are a number of ways that contractors can deal with the rise in material costs. They can write safeguards into contracts with clients against the possibility of rising material costs, employ alternative materials when available, and take on more modular construction projects.

Perhaps the best way, however, to offset the rise in materials is to embrace cost-saving measures on the construction site.

Implementing technological solutions can save construction firms considerable time and expense, thus making material overruns less severe.

Below, we will highlight some of the innovations MCA has to offer to the construction industry–innovations that, if fully implemented, will defray the significant recent rise in material costs in construction.

  1. Technology

There are a number of technological solutions that contractors should consider to save money in the long run. The ideal solution to introducing cost-saving innovations is to rely on a suite of different technologies. You may consider the following MCA solutions:

  1. Upgrading your radio fleet and employing cloud-based data and communication software, automating your work tasks
  2. Purchasing rugged laptops and tablets to assist your workforce in quickly implementing tasks and completing projects.
  3. Outfitting your equipment vehicles with communication devices to provide your team with the ability to complete jobs more efficiently and expertly.
  4. Employing a mobile internet “box” at the worksite or connected construction trailer.

These are but a few of a number of technology solutions that contractors and construction firms might consider.

Again, the best option for your particular construction firm may be adopting one, or several, solutions from MCA’s extensive portfolio of devices and systems for the industry.

  1. Worker Safety

Construction workplace safety is not a new issue. Rather, it has always been an issue because the job can be especially dangerous. According to OSHA’s most recent report, 21.1% of workplace fatalities were in the field of construction.

Given the nature of the work, electrocution, injury from falling objects, and slips and falls from heights comprise the majority of construction job site injuries and fatalities. OSHA has a number of compliance guidelines that the construction industry is required to follow.

Beyond making sure that accidents don’t occur, however, when an accident does happen, it’s important to make sure your emergency response systems are in top working order.

When you’re involved in a new construction, you need to meet certain safety standards in order to gain a Certificate of Occupancy.

Having an external communication network to connect with first responders not only protects workers, but is a requirement for your building’s end users.

Additionally, you want to ensure that your building does not contain any dead zones, which can be solved by adding distributed cell spots throughout your structure during construction.

Mobile Communications has been a valued partner of our clients in the construction industry, and we will continue to be into the future.

When it comes to radios that keep workers on the jobsite in contact with their supervisors, The Connected Construction Trailer™ from our channel partners at USAT, and in-building cellular enhancement systems, among other solutions, MCA continues to innovate so that construction as an industry can continue to thrive.

Street Smart™ on Panasonic Toughbooks from MCA: A Crime Fighting Solution

Technology for police officers has come a long way from simple license plate recognition. Today’s tech for law enforcement depends on accessing real-time data in fighting crime.

Thankfully, the Panasonic line of Toughbooks can now be outfitted with Street Smart™ software, which provides law enforcement officers in the field up-to-the-minute data analytics and feeds, maps, bulletins, and a host of case management tools.

MCA’s officer-driven platform offers essential information regarding incidents and crime scenes, along with data about crime patterns in particular areas for predictive policing. Street Smart technology goes well beyond CAD and RMS in supplying real-time reports.

Identifying crime patterns is of paramount importance for police departments and officers across the country. With Street Smart’s Map Viewer, you can immediately know where crimes are occurring and where criminal offenders are located.

Our software’s color-coded dots, customizable icons, and time-slice views help to organize and categorize criminal activity, while our Esri GIS interactive maps ensure that your information is current and accurate.

Allowing officers to more effectively anticipate emerging crime patterns, and providing them with the situational awareness they need, is Street Smart’s ultimate goal.

At the same time, Street Smart’s Bulletin Management system alerts officers of important action items, while keeping tabs on criminal offenders. MCA’s data-driven, easy-to-browse interface enables officers to immediately respond to incidents and assess dangerous situations. Officers can create, edit, comment on, and view relevant info on a portable real-time crime center.

Officers have access to:

  • Crime Alert Bulletins
  • Intelligence Bulletins
  • Officer Safety Bulletins
  • Wanted Bulletins
  • External Bulletins from other agencies

This bulletin system is quite helpful, for instance, in notifying officers of an escaped suspect or in responding to other dangerous situations that impact officer safety.

Street Smart’s bulletin system complements the software’s Crime-Fighting Discussion Board.

When your officers and detectives are working a big case or are facing a sudden surge in crime, the discussion board allows them to collaborate from miles away. Street Smart’s Discussion board encourages officers to share critical information on a case both between themselves and with other law enforcement agencies.

The information and tips shared on the Discussion Board allow officers to stay up to date on the latest breaks in their case.

Street Smart’s bulletin and discussion tools enable continuous communication between their internal and external law enforcement partners. Managing cases with real-time, actionable information and communication keeps officers and the public safe. Solving crimes typically involves identifying the same bad actors, and when law enforcement agencies communicate, the opportunity for criminals to commit crimes is greatly reduced.

Importantly, Street Smart is completely compatible with your force’s existing CAD/RMS technology. Our software greatly improves your department’s ability to:

  • Evaluate records
  • Verify Records
  • Qualify Crimes

CAD confirmation is typically performed through the Crime Validation Form, but our software also takes Intel and Street Check data types into account. We put all the information in front of your team, giving officers the ability to interpret important data, even when it doesn’t show up on a CAD record.

With Street Smart you also have the option to store even more data in your system. MCA can warehouse Offender, Juvenile, and Home Detention Data to help officers focus their search, streamlining investigations. These records include the criminal history of known offenders and can be personalized to fit the needs of your agency. This enables officers to avoid information hierarchies by putting everything they need right at their fingertips.

Collect, analyze, and assess all the information you need to engage in smart policing.

Finally, with its new mobile interface, Street Smart has given law enforcement personnel the ability to access our software features on all Toughbook devices. This new user interface improves the ability to share information from across multiple Toughbook devices, keeping you in constant contact with your team.

Officers can now share information with access to up-to-the-minute data, maps, discussions, and bulletins. This technology allows police to solve crimes quicker and maximize their effectiveness.

Panasonic Toughbooks are used in police departments across the country. Their rugged design and user-friendly interface make for the perfect technology solution for law enforcement.

With the introduction of Street Smart, law enforcement can now leverage the best in crime-fighting technology with the durability and reliability they have come to expect from Panasonic devices.
