What Are Selenographic Coordinates?
Ever wanted to find the moon coordinates? Then look no further than selenographic coordinates! Selenographic coordinates are the longitude and latitude coordinates of the moon. Much like the Earth, astronomers use these types of measurements to find the exact location of the moon.
Latitudes are measurements for both North and South and show how far the moon is while Longitude measurements are used for East and West and show how far the moon is from those directions.
To find out how far the moon is from, astronomers use the moons prime meridian (or the middle of the moon). The prime meridian joins with both the North and South poles of the moon and is considered to be the closest part to our planet.
Like the equator of the planet, the prime meridian of the moon is 0 degrees between the East and West directions. Since we only see one face of the moon, we can see 90 degrees East to West. We could pee more during liberation periods, a diagram of numbers that show what we can and cannot see on the moon.
However, achieving to see such things at a 90-degree angle from East to West is considered hard to do.
If you want to see the moon, you need to know how to use selenographic coordinates as this is essential in finding it.
How to Use the Moons Special Selenographic Coordinate System?
You can use the selenographic coordinates for multiple purposes. You can simply use them with just using your telescope when finding the moon coordinates. You first want to point the telescope at objects that are in the “long shadow”, the line that parts the light from dark or day and night from the surface of the moon.
The terminate vary depending on the different phases of the moon: first and last quarters fall along with the moons prime meridian, the new moon is usually 90 degrees East, and at a full moon it falls at 90 degrees East.
You can also use the Selenographic Coordinate System by finding things on the moon, also known as the Lunar 100. Lunar 100 are the things you can see on the moon.
Each of these things has its moon coordinates, so you are going to need a lunar map to help you (there are different ones you can find online). Lunar maps help you with the coordinates and every major feature of the things you can see on the moon.
When using a lunar map, you will notice that the first number is North or South of the equator. The equator is always 0 degrees and the poles of both North and South are 90 degrees. Next are the West and East poles, which the second number gives you the longitude measurement.
This will tell you how far East or West the object is from the prime meridian (the meridian is 0 degrees while both the East and West are 90 degrees).
This can vary, however, since the moon has liberation. So take note that it may not always be 90 degrees as one direction could be more and the other a little less in degrees.
Many astrological corporations or astronomers use the selenographic coordinate system to find the coordinates of the moon.
Why is the moon coordinates important? Astrological corporations like NASA use the selenographic coordinate system to ensure the landings on the moon are accurate.
Because of these accurate landings, NASA and other space administrations have information about the moon and what is on it (you can find a lot more about this on the internet)! As for home astronomers, its important to us because we can the coordinates for the different things on the moon. Lunar maps help us with the coordinates and give us details on what each thing on the moon is.
Learning about the Earth’s satellite is important for any home astronomer or real astronomer. If you want to know more about the moon, here are some quick facts:
- We can fit 50 moons inside the Earth.
- It would take 3 months to walk completely around the moon
- The total times the moon orbits the Earth is about 13 times per year.
